BFD has been the virtual drum software of choice for producers, mix engineers, songwriters, and electronic drummers around the world.  Together with the Strata Kit's Prime module, they create the kind of expressive feeling that you should expect from a meticulously crafted instrument. However, under the hood, there is a truly state-of the-art sound engine that places a vast and detailed library of beautifully recorded drum kits. In this guide we'll talk about how to get those kits from off the computer and onto your kit.

Preparing a file from BFD3

The first thing you're going to want to do is to make a kit/tweak a preset in BFD3 until you have something you want to put on the module. When you're finished, you're going to want to go into your File>Save Kit.

From there, you're going to want to navigate your file browser to either the external media that you'll be plugging into the kit, or your desktop if you're planning on keeping a backup of the preset you made for safe keeping. Just make sure you're putting a copy of that onto the media(i.e. SD card or Flash Drive).

Importing a Kit from your removable media

From here, you're going to want to want to plug your media drive into the module, then press the Kit button on the module and tap the Kit Edit on the options on the left hand side of the screen.

On that same left hand side, you're going to want to tap the Import button, at the bottom of the column:

You should see your removable media here. Use your encoder to navigate, and press to select it, then navigate the media to select what you want to load, pressing the encoder then to select it.

This will put the kits into your user kit library, living on the module from there on out and automatically mapping them to the drums when called up, just like any other user kit. Feel free to eject your media once all the kits you want to import are on the module.

What file types are accepted on the module from BFD?

  • .bfd3 (BFD3 Preset)
  • .bfd3kit (BFD3 Kit)
  • .bfd3custkp (BFD3 “Processed” Kit Piece)

Any other BFD kit files, for example from BFD2 or BFD Lite, must be exported through BFD3 for compatibility with the Strata's Prime Module.
